As the road season draws to a close, Tadej Pogačar is already looking ahead and putting pen to paper on the three major goals of 2027: the World Championships , the Tour de France , where he will chase the record for a sixth yellow jersey, and the Vuelta a España .
The world cycling leader spoke on the sidelines of a charity golf event in Slovenia, where he also put an end to speculation about the crash that ended his Vuelta season. It's worth remembering that on stage 8, while leading the race, the Slovenian suffered a concussion and fractured collarbones and vertebrae. His version is succinct: " It was a large rock ; everything else is fake news."
His recovery is now almost complete. All that's missing is a return to racing. Pogačar has returned to training both on the rollers and on the road, and with November just around the corner, his plan is clear: slowly rebuild his condition to reach peak performance by January 1st. Meanwhile, the end of the season has changed completely in his absence, but everyone expects his dominance to return as soon as he's fully recovered.
Speaking to the Slovenian national television station RTVSlo , at the Arboretum in Volčji Potok, the champion explained: «Last week I started the new season and now it's a slow construction towards the future» .
He has no doubts about his goals: "My goal for next year would obviously be the World Championships, combined with the Tour and the Vuelta. If the Vuelta didn't go as planned this year... even though I'd prefer to go to the Giro, sooner or later I'll have to tick the Vuelta box. I think that will be my goal for next year."
Pogačar had hoped to return earlier, despite the team having declared its season over in the days following the crash, and he had his sights set on the European Championships in Slovenia. However, the risks were deemed too high. "The injury was quite serious. It took me a long time to get back on the bike. Five weeks. Once my shoulder healed and I no longer had any consequences or dizziness, I gave myself a boost, and we were also on vacation," he said.
"I started training on the rollers and doing physiotherapy thinking I could go to the European Championships, and this gave me extra motivation for rehabilitation. But a little over two weeks before the race, the moment came to realize that there was no point in running. If I had fallen again, the consequences could have been really serious and it wasn't worth the risk. Now I've been training regularly for a week, a month earlier than in previous years."
There's also talk of a possible return to the Tour Down Under in Australia, where he made his WorldTour debut with UAE in 2019, finishing 13th overall. Confirmation, however, will have to wait until December.
For now, Pogačar is still finishing 2026 as the top-ranked rider, despite missing the World Championships, the European Championships, and Il Lombardia. He won four of the five road classics he took part in: Strade Bianche , Milan-San Remo , the Tour of Flanders , and Liège-Bastogne-Liège , leaving only Paris-Roubaix to Wout van Aert. He also won the general classifications in Romandie, Switzerland, and the Tour de France, before stopping at the Vuelta a España.
