The transfer market is booming again, and this time the star is Javier Romo . Netcompany Ineos has announced the signing of the Spanish rouleur-climber, a former WorldTour stage winner, who has signed with the British team for two seasons.
The Toledo-born rider has reached an agreement with Movistar to terminate his contract with the Spanish team two years early. This mutual farewell came just hours after the end of the Tour of Guangxi, Romo's final race in the Movistar jersey, where he finished twelfth.
Romo is 27 years old and has only one professional victory: a stage win at the 2025 Tour Down Under, won in a solo breakaway. But his resume isn't as impressive as his successes suggest. He's already competed in five Grand Tours, the latest being this summer's Tour de France. There, he made a name for himself with an attack on the first stage to Alpe d'Huez and finished 54th overall. This spring, he also finished seventh at the Itzulia Basque Country, a top-ten finish that carries weight.
The move had been in the air since the summer, as Daniel Benson's newsletter had anticipated. It's part of Movistar's profound revitalization, which is focusing on a new generation of riders. The oldest name among the 2027 arrivals is Iván Cobo, 26, from Kern Pharma. Then there are the very young ones, like Javier Cubillas, who at 19 jumps directly from the Movistar Academy to the senior team.
Netcompany Ineos is also reshaping the group: so far, eight new additions and nine confirmed departures and retirements. Romo is the third Spaniard arriving for 2027, following Markel Beloki and Benjamin Noval .
The words of Geraint Thomas , the team's Director of Racing, clearly explain what they expect from him: "Javier is a truly strong rider, who has impressed us ever since he broke out. He has proven his worth in the WorldTour and has become an expert climber-rouleur, capable of making the difference in many different races."
Romo turned professional with Astana in 2021 and moved to Movistar in early 2024. The Spanish club, in its farewell statement, thanked the rider from Villafranca de los Caballeros for his work and dedication over the past three years.
