After the season ended early and doubts about his future, the Colombian from Netcompany Ineos is closer than ever to returning to the peloton

Egan Bernal 's future seems to be looking brighter again. The former Tour de France and Giro d'Italia winner is expected to return to the peloton in 2027, after doubts arose from the early end of his 2026 season.
The Colombian finished the year with a 20th-place finish at the Tour de France in July. In early October, the Netcompany Ineos rider posted a message on his Instagram profile to clarify his future and deny retirement rumors.
In that message, Bernal stated his intention to return in 2027, but left the door open to an early retirement from cycling: "I don't know exactly what the next few years hold, and I don't think I need to know everything now."
However, the latest signs make the situation more reassuring. The 29-year-old traveled from Colombia to Netcompany's headquarters in Copenhagen to participate in a team training camp, a move that suggests his desire to continue racing. This was further confirmed by the words of sports director Dario Cioni .
"Egan retired before the end of the season, but he had done the Giro and the Tour, so it's not something we've never seen before," Cioni explained. "It's clear that Bernal is a winner: he's not happy with finishing tenth. And rightly so, after the Giro and the Tour, he didn't feel he could be competitive, so he chose to end the season early. But he will restart as planned in 2027."
Having won the Tour at just 22, Bernal seemed like the heir apparent to the team's Grand Tour tradition. In 2021, he then won the Giro d'Italia, but despite a few flashes, he hasn't been the same since a serious training accident in Colombia in early 2022, which nearly ended his career.
The meeting in Denmark was also an opportunity to meet the new sponsor. Cioni described it as a moment halfway between the end of the 2026 season and the beginning of 2027: the riders underwent medical checks, while the staff held their series of meetings.
In the interview, Cioni also discussed the departure of Filippo Ganna , who is headed to Lidl-Trek, with whom he worked closely. "These are decisions that managers have to make. On a personal level, of course, I'm disappointed, but they are team decisions that must be respected," he said.
And again: "A rider like Pippo, who gives 100% to the goals he sets for himself, pushes everyone to the limit. I think that, as a team, until Remco [Evenepoel] arrived, we were the benchmark in time trials. Beating Remco is not easy, but if we look at the group, we are still at the top. We have the best package, certainly not inferior to that of Specialized, and we got there also thanks to a rider like Ganna."
