Giro d'Italia Women 2027: route, all the stages, and climbs that will decide the Maglia Rosa

The 2027 Giro d'Italia Women promises to be a spectacular event with nine stages, 1,132 kilometers, and a whopping 17,450 meters of elevation gain. From the start in Viareggio to the grand finale in the mountains of the Aosta Valley, here's the complete route and the main challenges of the women's Giro d'Italia.

The 2027 Giro d'Italia Women is shaping up to be one of the most challenging editions in recent years. Scheduled for May 29 to June 6, 2027 , the 38th edition of the Giro d'Italia will feature a particularly challenging route, with high mountains, summit finishes, and an individual time trial that could prove decisive for the general classification.

The athletes will face 9 consecutive stages without rest days , crossing Tuscany, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Valle d'Aosta.

The most striking figure is the elevation gain: 17,450 meters overall , almost 5,000 more than the 2026 edition. A route that seems designed to reward the strongest climbers and cyclists capable of maintaining a high performance throughout the week.

Giro d'Italia Women 2027: All the stages of the route

Here is the complete schedule of the nine stages:

  1. May 29: Viareggio-Viareggio, 124 km
  2. May 30: Massa-Genoa, 139 km
  3. May 31: Cogorno-Viadana, 171 km
  4. June 1: Credaro-Presolana Pass, 131 km
  5. June 2: Cassano d'Adda-Cassano d'Adda, 140 km
  6. June 3: Bergamo-Madesimo Valle Spluga, 137 km
  7. June 4: Carugate-Rho, 147 km
  8. June 5: Valdigne Tudor ITT, 11 km
  9. June 6: Mont Blanc Stage, 132 km

The route features three days with uphill finishes, including the time trial, and two particularly challenging mountain stages.

The first three stages: from Tuscany to the Po Valley

Stage 1 – Viareggio-Viareggio (124 km)

The 2027 Giro d'Italia Women will kick off in Versilia with a stage that could already provide a few surprises.

The inaugural circuit includes four passes on the Pitoro climb, an obstacle that could pose problems for less stamina-hungry sprinters.

The final climb will end about 21 kilometers from the finish, leaving room for a possible reunion. However, a final attack cannot be ruled out.

Stage 2 – Massa-Genoa (139 km)

The second day will take the group from Tuscany to Liguria, along a challenging route that includes the Bracco Pass.

In the finale, the climb of San Martino di Noceto will offer the attackers another opportunity before the final kilometers towards Genoa.

A stage that could favor explosive athletes and classics specialists.

Stage 3 – Cogorno-Viadana (171 km)

At 171 kilometers, it will be the longest stage of the entire Giro.

The Bocco Pass, tackled in the early stages of the race, will represent the main altitude challenge. Subsequently, the route will become progressively more favorable to the sprinters' teams.

The finish in Viadana could therefore provide one of the most anticipated sprints of the competition.

Stage 4: First major test on the Presolana Pass

The fourth stage, from Credaro to the Presolana Pass, will mark the first real test for the favorites to win.

In just 131 kilometers the athletes will have to tackle approximately 3,500 meters of altitude difference , with a succession of climbs that will include the Forcellino di Bianzano, the Ganda and the Colle di Zambla.

The decisive moment will be the final ascent towards the Presolana Pass.

The numbers of the final climb:

  1. Length: 11.6 km
  2. Average gradient: 5.4%
  3. Maximum gradient: 10%

The first part of the climb has relatively regular gradients, while the last few kilometres become noticeably more challenging.

This stage could create the first significant gaps between the contenders for the Maglia Rosa, especially if the race has been particularly selective on the previous climbs.

Stage 5: Sprinters take center stage in Cassano d'Adda

After the hardships of Presolana, the group will face a decidedly easier day.

The fifth stage will take place entirely around Cassano d'Adda, on a 140-kilometer circuit with just 300 meters of elevation gain.

On paper, it will be one of the best opportunities for the sprinters, although the teams will have to monitor any breakaway attempts.

Stage 6: Passo San Marco and Madesimo, the mountains take center stage again.

The sixth stage, from Bergamo to Madesimo-Valle Spluga, will represent one of the most important events of the Giro d'Italia Women 2027 .

The 137-kilometer route will feature two major climbs, capable of seriously testing the endurance of even the best climbers.

Passo San Marco: the Cima Alfonsina Road

The San Marco Pass will be the highest point of the entire competition, at 1,987 meters above sea level.

The climb is 19.6 kilometres long with an average gradient of 7.4% , but the most significant data concerns the second part of the ascent.

In the last 12 kilometers, in fact, the average gradient will reach 8.8%, with peaks of up to 15%.

Numbers that could favor an important selection already far from the finish line.

The uphill finish in Madesimo

After the San Marco Pass and the descent towards Valtellina, the athletes will head towards Chiavenna to tackle the last climb of the day.

The climb to Madesimo will measure 19.3 kilometers, with an average gradient of 6.3% and ramps up to 13%.

A combination of long and challenging climbs that could radically change the overall standings.

Stage 7: Carugate-Rho, last chance for the fast wheels

The seventh stage, 147 kilometers long, will cross various regions of Lombardy.

With only one climb classified as a Grand Prix of the Mountains, that of Sirtori, the route appears favorable to a sprint finish.

However, it could also become a good opportunity for the attackers, especially considering that the favorites will be focused on the decisive final stages.

Stage 8: The Valdigne time trial could change the Giro

On Saturday, June 5th, the athletes will face a time trial that is completely different from the traditional flat time trials.

The Valdigne time trial will be just 11 kilometers long, but it will be entirely uphill.

The main features:

  1. Length: 11 km
  2. Average gradient: 4.2%
  3. Maximum gradient: 9%
  4. Intermediate measurement: km 5.7

The ability to manage individual effort will be fundamental.

The differences between the top climbers could be small, but even a few seconds could prove decisive on the eve of the final stage.

Stage 9: Mont Blanc and Colle San Carlo will decide the 2027 Giro d'Italia Women.

The grand finale of the 2027 Giro d'Italia Women will take place on Sunday, June 6, in the Aosta Valley.

The stage called the Monte Bianco Stage will probably be the toughest of the entire race: 132 kilometers and approximately 3,950 meters of altitude difference , with four Grands Prix of the Mountains.

The route will include the climbs of Doues, Verrogne and Saint-Nicolas, before the last major difficulty.

Colle San Carlo: 10.5 km at an average gradient of 9.8%

Colle San Carlo, approached from the Morgex side, will be one of the key points of the 2027 edition.

An extremely challenging climb, with characteristics that could encourage attacks even from the favourites for the general classification.

The numbers of Colle San Carlo:

  1. Length: 10.5 km
  2. Average gradient: 9.8%
  3. Maximum gradient: 15%

From the summit there are about 25 kilometers to the finish line, including descents and final difficulties.

A distance sufficient to attempt a decisive action, especially for the athletes who still have energy after eight days of racing.

The Pink Jersey could be awarded right on the roads of the Aosta Valley.

What will be the decisive stages of the 2027 Giro d'Italia Women?

Analyzing the route, three particularly important days emerge for the general classification.

The fourth stage , with the arrival at the Presolana Pass, will represent the first direct confrontation between the best climbers.

The sixth stage , with Passo San Marco and Madesimo, could create significant gaps thanks to the length and difficulty of the climbs.

The final stage , with the very tough Colle San Carlo, will offer the last opportunity to overturn the general classification.

Also not to be underestimated is the Valdigne time trial, which will precede the final stage by just 24 hours.

Giro d'Italia Women 2027: A route for great climbers

The 2027 Giro d'Italia Women looks set to reward a well-rounded athlete, but above all one who is very strong on climbs.

The overall elevation gain, the presence of numerous alpine climbs and the absence of rest days will require consistency and recovery ability.

The sprinters will have some opportunities to take stage wins, but it will likely be the big mountains that will determine the outcome of the overall classification.

From the Presolana Pass to Colle San Carlo, passing through the San Marco Pass and Madesimo: the 2027 Giro d'Italia Women promises to be a great challenge for the best climbers in world cycling.
