Good news for the AG Insurance-Soudal athlete who is back training and aiming to recover ahead of the Tour de France Femmes.
Urška Žigart can breathe a sigh of relief: the Slovenian AG Insurance-Soudal rider, who suffered a fractured jaw last month following a nasty crash on the second stage of the Tour de Suisse, will not require surgery. This news also gives hope to those who follow her in fantasy cycling.
The accident was extremely unfortunate: the lead group, hurtling toward the finish line in the final kilometer, hit a pothole, causing a domino-like crash. This incident prompted the CPA Women to call for a substantial revision of the current SafeR safety model. And yet, Žigart was having a season to remember: sixth overall at the Vuelta Femenina and eighth at the Giro d'Italia Women, results achieved with great character, even after a particularly traumatic crash in the final stage of the Italian race.
Now, however, the news coming from the team is decidedly encouraging. "After further medical evaluations and follow-up checks, we are pleased to confirm that no surgery will be necessary," AG Insurance-Soudal announced in an Instagram post, accompanied by a photo of the rider already back on the road. "This allows Urška to continue her recovery in a more direct and gradual manner."
The team added: "Under the close supervision of our medical staff, Urška has been able to gradually resume training." This is encouraging progress for a season that seemed to have further promise.
It must be said that AG Insurance-Soudal's 2025 season has been truly plagued by injuries: Kim Le Court-Pienaar had to miss weeks of racing due to a fractured wrist sustained in the Tour of Flanders, only to return for the Tour de Suisse. Sarah Gigante 's situation is even more serious, having been sidelined since last August with a fractured femur, with subsequent complications requiring further surgery, further delaying her return to racing.
For Tadej Pogačar's girlfriend , however, the outlook finally looks brighter. Having a rider capable of two top-ten finishes in the Grand Tours in a single season back available is excellent news for the team and, obviously, for those who field her on their fantasy cycling teams. Be warned, however: no date has yet been announced for the 29-year-old's return to racing. The team has emphatically emphasized that it has no intention of rushing things.
"His return is being managed with great care, step by step, as he prepares to pursue his future goals," AG Insurance-Soudal said.
The Tour de France Femmes , scheduled for early August, remains in the background: a crucial event in the women's calendar, but one the Belgian team doesn't want to risk tackling with a less than 100% fit Žigart. Fantasy cyclists would be wise to keep an eye on her in the coming weeks: if she recovers in time, she could be one of the most interesting cards to play in the most prestigious stage race in the women's calendar.
