On the first pass over the San Fermo, Roglic and Jorgenson, among the top riders, broke away, while Pellizzari continued his work. On the Civiglio, Seixas took the lead early on, rejoined the breakaway, and broke away from all his rivals: the last to give way were Ciccone and Pidcock.

The Frenchman reached the summit with a 30-second lead over Ciccone and Mas , who rejoined at the end, and a minute over the rest of his rivals, with Evenepoel and Del Toro struggling on the climbs. Seixas also increased his lead on the San Fermo and soloed to his first career Monument.
