Rohan Dennis has been arrested on the terrible charge of running over and killing his wife Melissa Hoskins. The couple had two children.
The accident occurred outside the couple's home near Adelaide. The 32-year-old woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries and in critical condition. His death occurred a few hours later. According to Australian media, Dennis, who was behind the wheel, was arrested and charged with "manslaughter by reckless driving and endangering human life" . He is due to appear in court in Adelaide on March 13.
The accident occurs two weeks before the start of Australia's biggest cycling race, the Tour Down Under, which Dennis won in 2015. The former world time trial champion would have been an ambassador for the family race together with his wife.
On the day of his arrest, 33-year-old Dennis was on his last day of work for Visma-Lease a Bike (formerly Jumbo-Visma). The Australian had announced his retirement at the very end of 2023 .
Rohan Dennis was a two-time world time trial champion, in 2018 and 2019. He also broke the world hour record in 2015 and took bronze in the time trial at the 2021 Olympics. In his career he has raced for BMC, Bahrain- Merida, Team INEOS and, indeed, Jumbo Visma winning a total of 33 races.
