Lidl-Trek Acquisition: Igor Arrieta Arrives

The transfer market continues to provide dramatic twists and turns, and this time it's Lidl-Trek who's making a splash. Andy Schleck's team has announced the arrival of Spanish climber Igor Arrieta , who's leaving UAE Team Emirates-XRG to sign a three-year contract. This move further strengthens an already top-notch squad.

Born in 2004, Arrieta rose through the youth ranks of Lizarte before making his professional debut with Kern Pharma. He trained at the UAE Team for the past three years, but this season marked his true breakthrough: a stage win at the Giro d'Italia and a third-place finish at the AlUla Tour are just the tip of the iceberg of a remarkable year.

Not just the Giro: the Basque rider also scored a second-place finish at the Ordiziako Klasikoa and top-10 finishes at the Clásica Jaén, the Faun-Ardèche Classic, the Itzulia Basque Country, and the Tour de Luxembourg. A resume that demonstrates versatility and consistent results, two essential qualities for those aiming to become an asset in fantasy cycling teams.

"I have a fantastic feeling about signing for Lidl-Trek: it's a truly great team that continues to grow under Lidl's ownership," Arrieta said upon making the announcement. "I'm really excited to continue growing as a rider next season. I've improved every year over the past few years, and I think I can continue this path at Lidl-Trek. I'm thrilled to be riding alongside such great talents as Skjelmose, Pedersen, Ciccone, and all the other guys on the team."

The moment that truly cemented Arrieta's place in the eyes of all was undoubtedly stage 5 of the Giro d'Italia in May, finishing in Potenza. A dramatic finish, made even more chaotic by the pouring rain, saw the Spanish rider locked in a heated head-to-head with Afonso Eulálio. Both fell in the final kilometers, and Arrieta even took the wrong route. Yet, with a phenomenal comeback, he managed to pass Eulálio in the final hundred meters, taking a victory that will go down in history.

With this arrival, Lidl-Trek further expands its Spanish contingent, which already included Juan Ayuso, Héctor Álvarez, and Carlos Verona. The team thus grows to 29 riders for the 2027 season, with a maximum of 30 possible registrations. Also noteworthy is the promotion of Álvarez from the Lidl-Trek Future Racing team, in addition to the arrivals of the Austrian duo Felix Gall and Gregor Mühlberger from Decathlon CMA CGM, as well as those of Georg Zimmermann (formerly of Lotto-Intermarché) and Jordan Jegat (formerly of TotalEnergies).

Lidl-Trek CEO Andy Schleck made no secret of his excitement at the achievement: "Stage 5 of this year's Giro d'Italia was one of the most dramatic finishes of the race, and Igor's victory in Potenza impressed us, highlighting not only his talent and instincts as a rider, but also his potential as a future star. We believe Igor has a brilliant career ahead of him, and we're thrilled to work with him and watch him grow."

For UAE Team Emirates-XRG, this is the second departure of this winter transfer window, following Juan Sebastián Molano, now headed to Lotto-Intermarché. The Emirati team has already begun rebuilding, announcing the arrivals of Abel Balderstone from Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, Marco Frigo from NSN, and the promotion of the very young Davide Stella.
