The runner, convicted by the judge, will be able to leave Australia

The Australian misadventure of Mathieu Van der Poel ends with a fine. The Dutch runner, arrested following an altercation with two teenagers who were bothering him during his night's rest before the world championship race, appeared today before the judge, who, as reported by NOS, fined about a thousand euros ( 1500 Australian dollars) the runner for pushing the two girls, one of whom allegedly injured her arm.

The Australian judge did not take the fact that Van der Poel was due to run a major race the next day as extenuating and agreed that he should call hotel security instead of trying to sort things out on his own. The runner's lawyer has stated that he will appeal against the sentence.

Van der Poel will still be able to leave the country (his passport was initially withdrawn) and will return home in the next few hours.
