Pogacar beaten in sprint after a wonderful race
Wout Van Aert won the 123rd edition of Paris-Roubaix.
A crazy, thrilling race. No breakaway from the start, the peloton split up with over 100 km to go. Numerous punctures: from Pogacar, who had to change bikes before Arenberg, but then rejoined, gaining a minute, to Van der Poel, who punctured right in the forest (as did Philipsen) and was forced into a long chase. Filippo Ganna also had problems, ending up on the ground after yet another puncture.
Pogacar, Van Aert, Laporte, Pedersen, Bissegger, Pithie (who later crashed), and Stuyven remained in front. With just over 50 kilometers to go, Van Aert attacked, followed by the world champion. Meanwhile, Van der Poel caught up with the Pedersen group along with Tim Van Dijke and continued his desperate comeback. On the Carrefour de l'Arbre, Pogacar attempted to drop Van Aert but was unsuccessful.
The two battled it out for the Roubaix at the Velodrome: the Belgian had the upper hand and beat Pogacar in the sprint. For Van Aert, it was the second Monument of his career, but above all, the end of a nightmare.
