Vollering and Longo Borghini jokes
A dramatic turn of events at the 28th edition of the women's Flèche Wallonne: on the Muur de Huy, it was Dutchwoman Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck) who surprised everyone, outwitting the favourite Demi Vollering (FDJ-Suez) in the final 150 metres for the young cyclo-cross rider's second road victory.
Third place for Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE ADQ), who confirmed her feeling with this race by climbing on the podium for the fourth time in her career.
The race, which ran over 140 km and was made even more difficult by bad weather and the absence of Anna van der Breggen (out with flu), featured several attacks. But as per tradition, everything was decided on the final climb: FDJ-Suez tried to launch Vollering, but Pieterse had the winning move. Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) finished fourth, beaten in the photo finish by Longo Borghini.
