The Eritrean beats Laporte in a sprint
It is Biniam Girmay who wins the 84th edition of the Ghent-Wevelgem, a Belgian classic of 248.8 km.
The decisive action began immediately after the last pass on the Kemmelberg, less than 30 km from the finish, with the attack of Christophe Laporte followed by Biniam Girmay, Jasper Stuyven and Dries Van Gestel. Behind them the agreement to take them back, thanks to the "breaking" work of Jumbo Visma, Intermarchè and Trek Segafredo, and despite the presence of big guns among the sprinters such as Merlier, Philipsen, Demare, Pedersen and Kristoff.
The four manage to increase the advantage to fight for the final victory: the 21-year-old Eritrean, the first African to win the race, wins. Beaten in the sprint Laporte, Van Gestel and Stuyven .
