Alec Segaert (Bahrain Victorius) wins the twelfth stage of the Giro d'Italia, from Imperia to Novi Ligure (175 km).
In the early stages, a five-man breakaway broke away, but the peloton kept it under control, with several riders attempting to rejoin the peloton at 90 km. The situation shifted, and six remained in front: Tarozzi, Dversnes, Rutsch, Jacobs, Van der Lee, and Geens.
On Colle Giovo, Movistar sets a high pace: the group returns to the breakaway and many sprinters drop away.
On Bric Berton, Magnier also immediately jumps, while Milan runs into difficulty near the top of the hill and is caught by the Frenchman.
The two try to join forces, but don't have enough support from their teammates to get back on track. Up front, Eulalio wins the Red Bull Km and gains a 6-second lead.
In the finale, Ciccone tries to break away from the sprint, but is quickly closed down. With 3 km to go , Segaert pulls away and outmaneuvers all the remaining fast riders in the group.
The Belgian wins by a wide margin, Aerts controls the group in the sprint, while Silva completes the podium.
No changes in the general classification.
