Great downhill attack by the Frenchwoman
Gery scored a surprise victory in the 7th stage of the Giro Women, with the FDJ rider in a strong group attacking on the descent and outrunning a small group in the sprint.
The first twist was a fall at -53 km involving around twenty athletes, fortunately without consequences.
On the only climb of the day, Pietragavina, the group sets the pace, but the sprinters hold off well.
On the subsequent descent, Gery and Persico gained an advantage and reached the 3 remaining athletes from the initial breakaway of the day, Segato, Jackson and Pegolo.
At the end of the descent, Brand and Longo Borghini also joined in, with the seven in command having a 40" margin on the pink jersey group at 10 km to go.
The sprinters' teams try to close in, but in vain. The seven in front hold out, thanks above all to the work of Longo Borghini, but Gery has the best start, beating Brand and Segato.
The overall standings remain unchanged; tomorrow's decisive stage, with the Colle delle Finestre and finish in Sestriere, begins.
