The Dane wins the stage and is the leader, Ayuso retires

Rain, cold, and crashes in the fourth stage of the Paris-Nice, 195 km from Bourges to Uchon. Among the casualties was Juan Ayuso, leader of the general classification and a favorite for the overall victory: the Spaniard, crashed along with other riders, was forced to abandon the race.

The peloton split up in the early stages of the race, with Red Bull Bora hansgrohe very active. Forty riders gained the lead, while Oscar Onley, Kevin Vauquelin, and Lenny Martinez were forced to chase (with the Briton crashing but managing to rejoin, though he lost over eight minutes at the finish).

Before the final climb, Daniel Martinez remained in front, supported up until that point first by Nico Denz and then by the Van Dijke twins, and Jonas Vingegaard, who had always been in the top positions.

The Dane from Visma attacked under the banner in the final kilometer and reached the finish line alone. He secured the stage and provisional first place overall. Dani Martinez followed him about forty seconds behind. The other top riders were over three minutes behind.
