Describing the route of the Milan-Sanremo can be really boring. Yet the last 30 km of the race are among the most exciting of the year. Especially if it rains as the weather forecast for Saturday, March 22 indicates.
We start from Pavia, destination Liguria, with a distant breakaway of second-rate riders practically certain.
The Passo del Turchino is tackled, then down towards the coast. After 200 km of the race, here are the leaders (Mele, Cervo and Berta), then the Cipressa with its 5.65 kilometers and an average gradient of 4.1% (peaks of 9%). Descent, return to the Aurelia and take the whole Poggio, a 3700 meter long climb that is definitely rideable but tackled at high speed. From the summit there are 5.6 km between a difficult descent and flatland towards the finish line on Via Roma.
The favorites - The names are the usual ones. Starting with Tadej Pogacar, ready to attack the most quoted opponents on several occasions. For the occasion he shows up with a very strong team that includes Tim Wellens, Isaac Del Toro and Jhonatan Narvaez. Speaking of opponents we must absolutely mention Filippo Ganna, who came out in great shape from Tirreno, Mads Pedersen, also seen in great condition at Nice, and Mathieu Van der Poel, who rarely misses the big appointments.
Other interesting names are Thomas Pidcock, Magnus Cort, Jasper Philipsen (for now, but he fell at Nokere Koerse), Michael Matthews and Maxim Van Gils (who is however recovering from an injury stop).
If he can keep up with the best, Jonathan Milan could have his say. But the distance remains an unknown.
