Breakaway for 100km, O'Connor and Van der Poel on the podium
Tadej Pogacar is the new world champion on the road among professionals. On the Zurich circuit, Alaphilippe, Almeida and Skjelmose immediately out. Bilbao also falls and retires shortly after. The race comes to life with 100 km to go, when Pogacar takes off and immediately creates a gap. The Slovenian resumes the escape in front of him, detaches the last fugitive Pavel Sivakov with 50 km to go and wins the rainbow jersey in the same year in which he also won the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France as, in the past, only Eddy Merckx and Stephen Roche have done.
Behind him there is a small group fighting for the podium. A super Ben O'Connor anticipates the sprint and finishes second at 34 seconds, third Mathieu Van der Poel, only fifth Remco Evenepoel. Italy did badly, never a protagonist.
