Tour de France, 5th stage: Kooij wins in the sprint

Kanter and Merlier defeated
Olav Kooij wins the fifth stage of the Tour de France, from Lannemezan to Pau (158.3 km).
Today, only Veistroffer broke away, managing to win the intermediate sprint and the Cote de Baleix mountain pass, before being caught with 14 km to go.
The last 10 km were particularly chaotic with Cofidis setting a very high pace and a crash split the group before the final 5 km were neutralized.
Astana took control in the final kilometer, but Kooij launched a sprint with 200 meters to go. No one could catch the Dutchman, who won by a landslide; Kanter took second place, Merlier third.
The big names arrive together 14 seconds apart and everything remains unchanged in the general classification.
Tomorrow is the first mountain stage in the Pyrenees, with Col d'Aspin and Tourmalet.
