The Belgian also reopens the fight for the green jersey
Japser Philipsen sprints to victory in the 16th stage of the Tour de France, from Gruissan to Nimes, 188.6 km.
The stage, almost completely flat, is animated only by the solo breakaway of Gachignard (TotalEnergies). The Frenchman is caught 25 km from the finish line, by the yellow jersey group launched at great speed towards the final sprint.
A roundabout in the last few kilometres puts Biniam Girmay out of the game, as he falls on the barriers.
On the final straight, after the work of Uno-X, Van der Poel moves perfectly as the last man for Philipsen ; the Belgian comes out with the right timing and scores the hat-trick in this Grande Boucle . On the podium of the day are Bauhaus and Kristoff .
In terms of the green jersey, Girmay now has a 36-point advantage over Philipsen, while as far as the general classification is concerned, everything remains unchanged after this stage.
