Sam Welsford (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe) sprints to victory in the first stage of the Tour Down Under, from Prospect to Gumeracha (150.7km).

A three-man breakaway consisting of Tronchon, Marriage and Browning did not scare the group, which caught up with the attackers about twenty kilometres from the finish line.

The group thus heads towards the finish line at a moderate pace, with a favorable road in the final stages. A fall in the final kilometers splits the group and makes the situation more chaotic. Red Bull-Bora takes over operations and a great job by Van Poppel puts Welsford in a perfect position to launch his own sprint and win easily ahead of Brennan and Walls .
