The Italian champion: "It's a relief. It's great to beat a champion like Vollering."

Elisa Longo Borghini wins the 137km Tre Valli Varesine women's race from Busto Arsizio to Varese . The Italian champion outsprints newly crowned European champion Demi Vollering after a tactically perfect race.

Elisa Longo Borghini attacks on the penultimate passage of the Montello climb (2 km at 4.5% average gradient), with 28 km to go, and Demi Vollering and Niamh Fisher Black manage to keep her wheel.

On the following descent, however, the group of the best riders regrouped and fifteen remained in command.

Then, on the Salita dei Ronchi, world champion Magdeleine Vallieres (Team EF) and Karlijn Swinkels (UAE) pulled away, gaining about twenty seconds. Elisa Longo Borghini, with her UAE teammate ahead, followed closely behind, watching Vollering's moves.

Vallieres then attempted to break away alone, but was caught at the end of the final pass on the Montello by the newly crowned European champion Demi Vollering, Niamh Fisher Black, and Elisa Longo Borghini. The foursome continued to advance until they were four miles from the finish, but their closest pursuers fell back. There were fourteen of them in front, as Ashleigh Moolman slipped on a bend and was forced to drop back from the leading group.

On the Ronchi climb, Yara Kastelijn (Fenix Deceuninck) attacked, but Longo Borghini, Vollering, and Fisher Black kept up with her. Then Vollering attacked, and only Longo Borghini had the legs to follow. The Dutchman tried several times to accelerate to drop the Italian, but was unsuccessful; then, in the sprint, Longo Borghini got off to a flying start and went on to win. Third place went to Switzerland's Noemi Ruegg, while another Italian, Eleonora Gasparrini , finished fourth.

The Italian champion won the Tre Valli Varesine for the second time in her career, having won in 2022, and couldn't hide her joy at beating European champion Demi Vollering: "It's a great relief and a great satisfaction to beat a champion like Vollering. On Saturday (at the European Championships), she gave me a beating, and today I gave her back."
