Very small gaps between the big names

Eddie Dunbar wins the twentieth stage of the Vuelta, starting from Villarcayo and finishing uphill in Picón Blanco (172km).

From the initial breakaway of ten riders, on the Portillo de Lunada , Frigo , Vine , Castrillo , Berthet and Soler escape, with the latter repeatedly trying to attack, but never decisively. The group keeps the breakaway under control, thanks above all to the work of the Soudal Quick-Step.

On the Puerto de los Tornos , the penultimate climb of the day, it was Landa's team that pulled away: a dozen riders remained in the leading group and Carlos Rodriguez broke away .

As soon as the breakaway is re-established, Sivakov attacks and reaches the top with a 40" advantage. On Picon Blanco the big names remain all together, until 3 km from the end with Dunbar taking the lead of the race. Behind him remain Roglic, Carapaz, Gaudu and Mas, a few seconds behind.

The Irishman manages to resist in the very tough final kilometer and finds his second personal victory in this Vuelta. Mas and Roglic complete the podium of the day. For the first ten riders, the gaps are very small, despite the numerous GPMs present in the stage.

Roglic will secure his fourth Vuelta tomorrow in the final 24.6km time trial, with Carapaz, Mas and O'Connor battling it out for second and third place in the overall standings, with the Australian starting 9" ahead of the Spaniard and 58" ahead of the Ecuadorian.
