Carapaz second, O'Connor remains on top of overall
Adam Yates won the ninth stage of the Vuelta a España, from Motril to Granada, 178.5km.
The British rider breaks away with other attackers, leaving them all behind on the first pass of Alto de Hazanallas, 58 km from the finish, and manages his advantage over his opponents, arriving alone at the finish line. An important success for Uae Emirates, who lost Joao Almeida, who did not start again this morning.
Behind him, a bit of everything happens: Richard Carapaz also attacks and arrives second on the stage. Enric Mas also tries but the Spaniard risks falling on the descent and is caught by the small group with Primoz Roglic and Ben O'Connor, who arrive together at the finish line almost 4' from Yates.
The Australian from Decathlon Ag2R remains firmly at the top of the general classification that sees the recovery of Yates and Carapaz and the collapse of Antonio Tiberi. The Roman was forced to retire.
Tomorrow is the first rest day for a decidedly uncertain Vuelta.
