The Spanish champion attacks from afar and surprises the group
Ivan Romeo wins the second stage of the Vuelta Andalucia , the 138.5km Route del Sol from Torrox to Tura. The Spanish champion from Movistar achieved a resounding success by attacking from afar and making an impressive attack in the finale.
Three of them attack, in addition to Ivan Romeo (Movistar) there are also Andreas Leknessund (Uno X) and New Zealander Josh Burnett (Burgos Burpellet BH) .
At halfway through the race, the three attackers had a lead of around 2'30" over the group, with Frenchman Matteo Vercher (of TotalEnergies) trying to pull away, but without success.
With 37km to go, Burnett is unable to keep up the pace and only Romeo and Leknessund remain in front, while the group is 2'20” behind. The Norwegian rider from Uno X takes the lead on the Alto de la Malaha mountain pass, less than 13 km from the finish, as the peloton closes its gap to 1'20".
The peloton was unable to catch up with the two in front, and with just under a kilometer to go , Romeo launched the decisive attack, with Leknessund unable to hold onto his wheel . The Spanish national champion went on to win with a 7-second advantage over Leknessund, while the peloton closed to 57 seconds with the sprint for third place won by Alex Aranburu. Team UAE, with Christen finishing fourth on the stage, was out of contention, as was Visma, with Laporte losing the lead in the general classification, which was now held by Romeo.
