The Briton beats Merckx by victories at the Grande Boucle

Mark Cavendish wins the 177.4km stage five of the 2024 Tour de France from Saint-Jean-de Maurienne to Saint Vulbas. The Briton makes history and wins the thirty-fifth stage of the Tour de France, overtaking a legend like Eddie Merckx .

The race is characterized by the breakaway of two riders, Clément Russo (Groupama FDJ) and Matteo Vercher (TotalEnergies) who the group controls, keeping them at a maximum gap of about 4'.

The escapees are caught 36 km from the end and the final sprint awaits; the risks, for the men in the rankings, are represented by possible falls. The yellow jersey Pogacar risks crashing into a traffic island and avoids the obstacle with a highly skilled manoeuvre, while 25km from the end, another fall involves Cristophe Laporte.

In the sprint everyone jostles to take Philipsen 's wheel, Pedersen goes to the ground, then Cavendish comes out at the right time and Philipsen can't help but stay close behind. Kristoff arrives in third position, ahead of De Lie who places fourth.
