Thomas De Gendt won the eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia, with start and finish in Naples, of 153 km. A fraction that has rewarded, once again, some brave fugitives (and with good legs).

Ready to go and it's immediately Mathieu Van der Poel : the Dutchman brings with him a group of 20 riders along the Neapolitan circuit with many ups and downs and a spectacular audience setting. Up front, among the brightest, are Girmay, Van Houcke, Schmid, Poels and Martin. Good Vendrame, Ulissi, Ravanelli and Felline, but the four Italians lack the sharpness when the race is decided.

The group of the pink jersey, Juan Pedro Lopez , takes no interest and lets it go. While the breakaway favorites look at each other, and Van der Poel fails to make a difference, four run away: De Gendt and Van Houcke of Lotto Soudal, Arcas of Movistar and an excellent Davide Gabburo of Bardiani, who benefit at -40 and they are no longer filmed.

After shooting for several kilometers, De Gendt has the strength to sprint and win over Gabburo and Arcas. Biniam Girmay finishes fifth ahead of Van der Poel.

The group arrives with a delay of more than 3 minutes.

Tomorrow the big names who want to win the Giro will no longer be able to hide: waiting for them will be the dreaded uphill finish on the Blockhaus .
