Merlier second, then disqualified
Jonathan Milan won the eleventh stage of the Giro d'Italia, from Foiano di Val Fortore to Francavilla al Mare of 207 km. For the Lidl Trek rider, who wears the cyclamen jersey of leader of the points classification, it is the second stage success.
On the day in which the Giro loses another protagonist (the leader of the youth classification, Cian Uijtdebroeks, does not leave due to illness), Thomas Champion, Edoardo Affini and his teammate Tim Van Dijke go on the run. The trio is caught again -35km from the finish, with the sprinters' teams preparing the ground for their fastest men.
The sprint to the finish line is very long: Tim Merlier is ahead but Milan catches up and beats him clearly. The Belgian from Soudal Quick Step was then disqualified for an irregular sprint. On the podium of the day Kaden Groves and Giovanni Lonardi. Fabio Jakobsen also crashed at the end, among those involved.
Tadej Pogacar retains the pink jersey. Tomorrow I arrive in Fano.
