Hayter bravely escapes with his shorts torn

Ethan Hayter narrowly missed out on the Vuelta a España leader's jersey for the second consecutive day, after virtually jumping to the overall lead thanks to his breakaway on stage 2. Another near miss, yet another insult for the British rider who appears to have a score to settle with the symbol of primacy in this race.

After losing by less than a tenth of a second to Tadej Pogačar in the opening time trial in Monaco, Hayter had declared that he wanted to try again on the first road stage, although he admitted that his fate would largely depend on the intentions of the Slovenian world champion.

The Soudal Quick-Step rider joined the day's breakaway, dropping his teammates as the peloton began to chip away at the lead, then powered solo to the intermediate sprint, collecting a six-second time bonus and virtually moving ahead of Pogačar in the overall standings. A tactically perfect move , which for fantasy cycling fans confirms Hayter's status as a valuable wildcard on breakaway days with bonuses up for grabs.

All he needed to win the first Grand Tour leader's jersey of his career was to reach the leading group and hope the Slovenian didn't win in a sprint. Easier said than done.

"I didn't take the jersey, did I? Do you know the result?" Hayter asked as he crossed the finish line in Manosque, before learning that Pogačar would keep the red.

The chaotic finish betrayed his ambitions: several splits in the peloton in the final kilometers relegated him to 80th place, a 31-second gap that dashed any hopes of a jersey. This is a wake-up call for those lining him up ahead of stages with tense finishes : positioning remains his Achilles heel, an aspect to be monitored closely in the coming weeks.

After the disappointment of stage 1, Hayter was once again left empty-handed. His Soudal-Quick-Step teammates failed to adequately protect him once he returned from the breakaway, and despite the difficult final approach, he himself admitted he simply had no legs left.

"It was almost a crash, a small gap at the end, and it was a tough finish for someone who had been in the breakaway," Hayter told Eurosport . "Also because of the positioning, I didn't have the legs to push further than where I was. It's a shame, but it was nice to try."

Explaining the most critical moment, Hayter added: "There was a roundabout; I think they only opened one lane, and we basically stopped in the middle of the pack. It happens, but hey...

"I was also sliding back on the climb anyway; I really had nothing left for such a tough finish. And the guys were doing complete trains and then suddenly stopping in the middle of the road. It's a bit tricky if you're not in front."

The team, however, has no complaints about the British rider's performance, despite his failure to follow the decisive attack by Wout van Aert and Pogačar, in a finale that saw his compatriot Matthew Brennan triumph.

"He did exactly what we agreed, and in the final kilometer—considering he'd been in the breakaway for 170 kilometers, partly alone—if guys like Van Aert and Pogačar then break away, we can't expect him to be able to follow them," explained Sports Director Sepp Vanmarcke. "I think he was pretty honest in the finale, and we did everything we could to fight for that red jersey."

Torn shorts towards the finish line

The other curious incident surrounding Hayter on Stage 2 involved his shorts, which were spotted completely torn at the back while he was still in the breakaway. A surreal scene that made the rounds on social media, but which hides a far from trivial backstory.

Explaining the reason for his choice of "modified" kit, Hayter explained that the organization simply didn't provide him with size options for the green points classification jersey, which he was wearing at the time. Rather than miss out on the opportunity to wear a leader's jersey, the Briton opted for the physical sacrifice: currently second in the points classification, Hayter will once again wear green on Monday's stage 3.

“The organization, for some reason, only gave me a size extra small, and then they didn’t have any spares, so they told me I could wear my team jersey or the green one,” Hayter said.

"I said I couldn't wear my team jersey, because you never know when your last day with it will be. But then we started the race and it felt like it was cutting off the circulation in my legs, so I had to rip it off. It seemed a little ridiculous, but I was in so much pain in the breakaway, and I started to feel a lot better once I gave my legs some breathing room."

For fantasy cycling, the lesson is clear: Hayter remains a rider to watch on breakaway days and intermediate sprints , capable of generating valuable points thanks to bonus points, but his performance in crowded and tense stage finales remains an unknown. Those lining up with him will have to carefully evaluate the type of finish expected before betting on him in the upcoming stages of the Vuelta.
