Viktória Chladoňová (Slovakia) outsprinted Canadian Isabella Holmgren to win the women's Under-23 road race at the UCI Road World Championships. This result feels like a rematch for the Slovakian, who improved on last year's silver medal and earned her country its first-ever gold medal in the discipline.

"It's an incredible feeling, I still can't believe it!" said a beaming Chladoňová at the finish line. "It wasn't an easy race, but I'm really happy."

Chladoňová's tactic was textbook fantasy cycling: let her opponent expose herself first. Forced to stay in the lead as the two raced under the red flag in the final kilometer, the Slovakian waited patiently for Holmgren to launch the sprint first, then swept her away with a decisive acceleration 125 meters from the finish line.

The podium was rounded out with bronze for Belgian Fleur Moors, who excelled in breaking away from the chasing pack, ahead of Swiss Mara Winter and Australian Talia Appleton. This is excellent news for those who had been counting on Moors for their teams: the Belgian confirms her status as a wildcard not to be underestimated in one-day races.

The race was decided with 31 kilometers to go, when Chladoňová and Isabella Holmgren broke away alongside Moors, taking advantage of the blistering pace previously set by Holmgren's compatriot, Ava Holmgren, who had heavily influenced the main group. It was a true team effort by Canada, but in the end, it wasn't enough to take home the gold.

The group of three leaders held firm until the final climb of the day on the Voie Camillien-Houde, when an attack by German Justyna Czapla from the chasing group forced Isabella Holmgren to accelerate further, dropping Moors and leaving the two protagonists alone in the lead.

In the final kilometers, Holmgren repeatedly attempted, but unsuccessfully, to drop Chladoňová before the final sprint. The two arrived together under the red flag, with the chasing group 35 seconds behind, a margin that made a two-man sprint the only possible outcome for the gold medal.
