Vollering did it: she's world champion

Demi Vollering is the new world cycling champion. A spectacular race in Montreal saw the favorites battle it out for the title until the very end. And after 180 km, the world number one is celebrating.

A nasty crash eliminated several contenders far from the finish line, including Le Court, Blasi, and Fisher Black. The pack thinned out as the laps passed along the challenging street circuit, thanks in part to the work of the Dutch team. With less than 40 km to go, Vollering took off, followed by Longo Borghini, Niewiadoma, and Berthet, with Reusser and Pieterse trailing behind. Vollering was caught just before the final lap; Longo Borghini attempted to make a run for it, but Vollering and Niewiadoma rejoined. Two riders remained at the front with a thrilling finish: Vollering beat Niewiadoma in the sprint, while Longo Borghini finished third, just seconds ahead of Reusser.

Vollering has had a memorable 2026: before the rainbow jersey, he had won Flanders, Liège, the Giro d'Italia, and the Tour de France.
