Oscar Onley (Netcompany Ineos) returned to the podium with a bang, claiming the Valle del Sol summit finish and winning the second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos . This success had a double meaning: his first victory since joining the British team and his immediate victory in the overall leader's jersey.

For the Scottish rider, this is his first race since the crash that forced him to withdraw from the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes , an injury that also cost him his participation in the Tour de France . It was a brilliant comeback, to say the least, coming at the end of a very tight uphill sprint, where Onley overtook Giulio Ciccone ( Lidl-Trek ) at the last gasp, narrowly edging out second place.

The decisive attack came from the young Belgian talent Jarno Widar (Lotto-Intermarché), who opened the proceedings by launching himself on the final, extremely tough 3.4km climb. The Lotto-Intermarché rider's attempt, however, was short-lived: Onley and Ciccone quickly caught and overtook him, while Enric Mas (Movistar) also found the energy to outpace him, finishing third, just two seconds behind Onley.
