Hirschi and Benoot beaten, Van der Poel out of the top 10

Thomas Pidcock won the 58th edition of the Amstel Gold Race, held today in the Netherlands, over a distance of 253.6 km.

Everyone is watching Mathieu Van der Poel but the world champion doesn't seem to be having a great day. Thus, 30 km from the finish line, 11 riders leave: Hirschi, Pidcock, Benoot, Mollema, Vansevenant, Adrià, Vauquelin, Madouas, Pacher, Bilbao and Lapeira (fleeing with Honorè before being caught by the fugitives). Behind, on the Cauberg, Skjelmose and Cosnefroy move but find no collaboration.

Hirschi, Pidcock, Benoot and Vansevenant accelerate before the Bemelerberg. The four battle it out for success in the sprint: the Ineos Grenadiers rider, second three years ago in a much-discussed sprint against Van Aert, beats Hirschi and Benoot and wins the race. Mathieu Van der Poel out of the top 10: in the end he is only 22nd.
