The Colombian reveals his plans for 2025, including participation in the Giro d'Italia

Former Tour de France winner Egan Bernal has revealed to Colombian media his plan to return to competition after a broken collarbone, listing the Volta a Catalunya as his next goal . The Ineos Grenadiers rider also confirmed his intention to compete in the 2025 Giro d'Italia.

2025 had started off on a high for Bernal, who had achieved a historic double at the Colombian Championships by winning both the time trial and the road race – his first successes in 1,346 days since his horrific crash in 2022. However, his joy was short-lived: on his European debut at the Clásica Jaén he crashed badly, breaking his collarbone .

The flash recovery

"I was very lucky after the crash," Bernal said. "I only missed three days of training. The same night I was in surgery, and after a medical consultation, I was able to resume training after just two days."

Currently training in Sicily, the Colombian reports having good feelings and encouraging numbers, although he recognizes that only the matches will be able to give a definitive verdict on his condition.

Objective Giro d'Italia

"I hope to be able to compete in Catalunya and do my best," Bernal said. "But I'm also thinking about preparing for the Giro d'Italia, where I would normally be at the start. I want to arrive at the Giro in great shape, and for that I need to be competitive in Catalunya."

The Catalan race, scheduled from March 24 to 30, will feature three uphill finishes : La Molina in the Pyrenees in the third stage, Montserrat in the fourth and Queralt in the sixth, before the traditional finale in the Montjuic Park in Barcelona.

Among the main expected opponents, Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), the winner of the Tirreno-Adriatico Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and, if he recovers from the hand injury suffered in Paris-Nice, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) stand out.
