Joao Almeida wins the sixteenth stage of the Giro d'Italia from Sabbio Chiese to Monte Bondone (203km). The Portuguese precedes Geraint Thomas in the two-man sprint, while Roglic loses ground.

Stage characterized by the escape of more than twenty runners, already from the first kilometres; among them also the reigning Italian champion Filippo Zana, Jack Haig, Patrick Konrad and Auréliene Parte-Peintre .

With 8 km to go, the fugitives' attempt ends and after the action of the men of Team UAE , Almeida extends. Only Thomas, Roglic, Kuss , a surprising Dunbar and Zana remain with the Portuguese, who resists and helps Team Jayco's teammate AlUla .  

Almeida accelerates twice again, first 6.5 km from the finish, then 5.8 km from the finish, and after taking a few meters ahead he is caught up by Thomas: two remain in the lead, because Roglic is in trouble and remains close behind teammate Kuss, with a gap of around 30”.

In the sprint, Almeida proved to be faster than Thomas, who however finished second and regained the pink jersey. Roglic reaches 25” and limits the damage.
