From Hindley's victory to the biggest disappointments; all the magic of the pink race

The next day there is always a veil of sadness. For three weeks the pink has enveloped our hearts and made it beat pedal after pedal. It may not have been the most spectacular Giro d'Italia ever, but in any case, the race had something to say, as always.

There was the challenge between the big names, taken for granted up to the last three kilometers of the twentieth stage, and then ignited in an instant by the peremptory shot of the young Hindley , who sank Carapaz 's dreams. It was the Giro in which Landa won against bad luck, but it was confirmed as always: beautiful, but incomplete.

It was the race of Vincenzo Nibali who bade farewell, in tears, in his Messina and then confirmed himself as an eternal champion, concluding with a fourth place that smells of enterprise.

Then, Pozzovivo , what about him, a real man even before a runner. One who fights against fate to be able to do what he loves most.

There was Van der Poel and for those who knew how to enjoy it it was a spectacle. The first pink jersey went to him, along with a fantastic stage victory; afterwards he tried in every way to win again, animating the race even on the terrain less suitable for him and it is no coincidence that he deserved the prize for combativeness. When he couldn't fight for success, Mathieu thrilled the fans with bike stunts worthy of the greatest acrobat; in short, a champion who embellished and honored our Giro.

How can we forget “Bini” Girmay , the first African to win a stage in the pink race. After the success, the mockery of the withdrawal, even in a grotesque way, for the cork of the sparkling wine ended up in the eye during the award ceremony. Too bad, we could still see some winning ideas, but in the end it's okay; we have discovered a new champion.

We had the confirmation of Arnaud Démare , splendid in cyclamen jersey and the surprise of Koen Bouwman , who won the blue jersey for best climber and conquered two stages.

How can we forget Juan Pedro Lopez , who grabbed the pink jersey on Etna and left it, as an honor, in Turin. In the end, however, the Spaniard of Trek Segafredo won the white jersey of best youngster, not bad.

There were the Italian successes: Dainese , Oldani , Ciccone , Covi and Sobrero . We will not have a man capable of competing for the final victory, but there is some glimmer and we have to start from here.

It was the Tour of disappointments, inevitable, from Miguel Angel Lopez , immediately retired, to Dumoulin which is no longer what it used to be, passing through Bardet , once again stopped by a physical problem, up to Simon Yates . The Briton was unable to fight for the classification, but before retiring he still placed two stage wins, one in the Budapest time trial and one in the most beautiful stage, that of Turin.

Flashes that animated another Giro that remains in our memories. Today the confetti of the party are already blown away, but the unique scent of a passion that never dies remains in the air.
