Valgren second, sprinters mocked

Benjamin Thomas won the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia, from Genoa to Lucca over 178 km.

After passing the Bracco Pass, the group proceeds towards Tuscany between falls, such as those of Laporte and Woods, and the attempt of four riders, Benjamin Thomas, Michael Valgren, Enzo Paleni and Andrea Pietrobon who maintain an advantage between 40 seconds and minute for several km. The sprinters' teams begin to work to close but the escapees are no longer caught and the stage success is at stake.

In Lucca the Frenchman from Cofidis beat Valgren in the sprint, with Pietrobon third. The group finished a few seconds behind and regulated by Jonathan Milan.

Tadej Pogacar retains the pink jersey.
