Italy wins the mixed team time relay!

Italy won the gold medal in the mixed time relay at the 2026 Road World Championships in Montreal for the first time in its history. With a masterful performance in terms of separation, time management and teamwork, the Italian team dominated the Canadian course, ahead of France and Switzerland , giving the Italian team the first most precious metal of this world championship.

The 40.6-kilometer course (divided equally into two 20.3-kilometer sections) showcased the strength of the Italian team, which presented itself at the start as the most competitive team ever for this specialty.

In the first part of the race, the men's trio of Filippo Ganna , Matteo Sobrero , and Mattia Cattaneo literally made their bikes fly. Ganna, galvanized by his silver medal in the individual time trial behind Evenepoel, acted as a veritable locomotive, setting an unsustainable pace for his opponents and building up a precious lead at the handoff.

The virtual baton then passed to the women's trio: Elisa Longo Borghini, Vittoria Guazzini , and Monica Trinca Colonel, who handled the stage with tactical intelligence and steady nerves. Despite the pressure from their pursuers, the Italians were able to relaunch the attack in the toughest sections, maintaining their lead and crossing the finish line with a final time of 51'32". France was 8 seconds behind, Switzerland 19 seconds behind.
