The winner of the 2022 Giro will be the Slovenian's domestique, but he underlines the importance of having more cards to play
Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe's Jai Hindley is preparing to support captain Primož Roglič at the next Giro d'Italia, but stressed that the team must be ready to 'manage the unexpected' in the race for overall victory.
Hindley, winner of the 2022 Giro, will be presenting himself this year as a domestique rather than a leader, with his moment as captain postponed to the Vuelta a España. In May he will therefore be completely at Roglič's service in his quest for a second triumph in the pink race.
The Tour of the Alps was supposed to be the last pre-Giro test for the Australian, with the chance to try for a personal result before taking on the role of Roglic's last man, but the condition was not what was hoped for:
' I was hoping for better legs , the shape is not bad, but I expected something more'Although opportunities for leadership are now rarer with the arrival of Roglič, Hindley sees the two-pronged approach of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe in the biggest races as a positive:
' In modern cycling, you often go to races with multiple leaders, and it's the best strategy for teams to have more cards to play in the final stages .'While ruling out a co-leader role at the Giro, he maintains a realistic vision:
'Primož is our main leader, but it's a long race and you always have to be ready for the unexpected'As for current form, Hindley is not worried after the long spell at altitude:
'From experience, it always takes time to find the race rhythm. I feel reasonably good and I hope to improve for the Giro.'
