Almeida and Lipowitz beaten by a few hundredths

Maximilian Schachmann won the first stage of the Itzulia, the Tour of the Basque Country, a 16.5km individual time trial from Vitoria to Baskonia.

The Soudal Quick Step rider, who returns to victory in a World Tour race after four years, stopped the clock at 18'37" at an average speed of 53.2 km/h. The German beat Joao Almeida and Florian Lipowitz by a few hundredths. Schachmann is the first leader of the general classification.
