The Fall of Træen: Fracture and Trauma

The Norwegian from Uno-X Mobility relinquishes his Tour lead.

Torstein Træen 's fairytale in the yellow jersey ended in the most abrupt way possible: a violent crash on the descent of the Col du Tourmalet , during the fifth stage of the 2026 Tour de France, put an end to the Norwegian rider of Uno-X Mobility's adventure as race leader.
Træen had earned the Maillot Jaune with a classic opportunistic move: infiltrating the day's breakaway on stage four and building a lead of nearly eight minutes over the main contenders for the general classification, led by Tadej Pogačar. A huge margin, it raised hopes of a continuation of the yellow jersey until the second week of the race.
But the plans were upended by the fifth stage. Even before his fatal crash, Træen had already begun to lose ground on the Tourmalet buttresses, when the pace set by UAE Team Emirates became selective, and the Norwegian broke away from the leading group. At that point, the yellow jersey was virtually lost.
But the worst was yet to come. Halfway down the descent, while being piloted by a teammate, a fatal wheel contact occurred: the domestique slowed near a left-hand bend, Træen continued on the inside, the two touched, and the Tour leader fell heavily to the ground, hitting his shoulder, neck, and likely his head as well .
Sitting on the asphalt, his yellow jersey dusty, and the race doctors surrounding him, the picture was grim. Træen then remounted and finished the stage, even managing to joke about the incident with his teammate in the valley below, but his stint as leader of the 2026 Tour de France was officially over. The medical report issued that evening was grim: fractured ribs and injuries to his right shoulder and elbow.
Fantasy cycling analysis: the Træen affair is a warning to all fantasy cycling coaches. The Norwegian was highly valuable in the breakaway and for the bonus points associated with the yellow jersey, but his non-climber nature made him a high-risk investment in the mountain stages. Those who had bet on him for the leadership bonuses in the early stages reaped excellent points; now the focus shifts definitively to the big names in the general classification, with Pogačar and his rivals ready to battle without the cushion of the gap accumulated by the breakaway.
