Double world title after last year's junior title
Lorenzo Mark Finn (Italy) is the new U23 world champion! The Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe Rookies rider triumphed solo in the 164km stage in Kigali.
Belgium led the race from the early stages with a high pace, so much so that the day's breakaway failed to form. With five laps to go, the race heated up with an attack by Alvarez and the first moves by Finn and Widar.
In the next lap an interesting leading sextet was formed consisting of: Alvarez, Finn, Solven, Schrettl, Huber and Gajdulewicz.
With three laps to go, on the Cote de Kimihurura, Finn gradually pulls away , and only Swiss rider Huber manages to keep up. In the small group with the other top riders, Widar tries to close the gap, but is unable to make a difference.
The two worked together and widened their lead over both their closest pursuers and the remnants of the main group. On the final pass on Kigali Golf, Finn made a strong attack and dropped Huber.
The Italian sprinted alone to the finish line and took the rainbow jersey. Huber took silver, Schrettl bronze.
Finn is the first Italian to win the Junior and U23 World Championships: an Italian star is rising!
