Simone Velasco is the new Italian professional road cycling champion.

The Astana rider won the national championship held today, 24 June, in Comano Terme, in Trentino Alto Adige.

The podium is completed by Lorenzo Rota of Intermarché, second, and Kristian Sbaragli of Alpecin, third.

Velasco, 27 years old, is at his fifth victory as a prof.

Nothing to do for the favorites of the day, including Giulio Ciccone and Antonio Tiberi.

Velasco's words after the finish: "Today was a very tough day due to the heat, my teammates did a great job and in the sprint at the end I was aware of my fast starting point. I've been chasing the tricolor jersey for many years, I couldn't ask for more. I dedicate the victory to my daughter and to the many people who were close to me and are no longer here".
