The Australian in the yellow jersey. Vingegaard attacks, Pogacar loses ground

Jai Hindley wins the 162.7km stage 5 of the Tour de France from Pau to Laruns. The Australian arrives alone at the finish line and also conquers the yellow jersey.

Second place for Giulio Ciccone who precedes Gall, Buchmann and above all Jonas Vingegaard in the sprint; the Dane attacks and gives more than a minute to his bigger rival, Tadej Pogaca r.

First stage in the Pyrenees, with many men attacking. Van Aert and Campenaerts gain about 20” over a group of over thirty riders, including Bora leader Hansgrohe, Jai Hindley, Giulio Ciccone (Lidl Trek) and Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick Step). The yellow jersey group follows 3' behind the lead men with 80 km left to go.

On the Col du Soudet Ciccone extends and reaches Van Aert. Behind the Italian rider are (besides Van Aert himself) Hindley, Gall and Neilands. Then Gall counterattacks and with 1.2 to go from the end of the climb he goes off on his own and passes first on the mountain grand prix. The yellow jersey group, pulled by the men of UAE Team Emirates, passes 4' late.

On the descent, the group of attackers regrouped and counterattacked, Van Aert, Neilands and Alaphilippe, who took a 20” lead, but the three were caught again at the foot of the Col de Marie Blanque . With 30km to go to the finish line, the yellow jersey group still has a delay of more than 3' from the leading men.

Then he attacks Hindley , who is left alone in command. Behind, on the other hand, the Jumbo recalls Van Aert from the breakaway and raises the pace: first the yellow jersey Yates comes off, and then Vingegaard accelerates and detaches Pogacar . At the end of the climb Hindley is 1' ahead of Vingegaard who in turn leads Pogacar by about 40”.

Then the final descent and the last 6km of flat where Hindley manages the advantage and arrives alone at the finish line. Behind Ciccone the sprint of the pursuers wins, with Vingegaard who finishes fifth, but who wins the first direct clash with Tadej Pogacar.
