Roglic and Evenepoel to amaze, Philipsen chasing the green jersey

Protagonists - Our march towards the 2024 Tour begins again with riders who will be able to fight for a prestigious result. This is the case of Primoz Roglic, captain of Bora hansgrohe, who only came close to the Tour (in 2020). On his side there is experience and a good team with Aleksandr Vlasov and Jay Hindley ready to help him in the mountains. The two time trials are also a point in his favor. On the other hand there is his advancing age and the too many falls that have affected him in recent years.

Ineos Grenadiers has found the undisputed captain with all due respect to Thomas Pidcock (who is in great shape anyway): we are talking about Carlos Rodriguez, winner of a stage last year and very close to the podium. At his disposal he will have the experience of Geraint Thomas and the legs of Laurent De Plus, already at the top at the recent Dauphiné. And then there's Egan Bernal, who has already won the Tour and who is improving day by day. The British team promises battle.

Remco Evenepoel is the loose cannon of the Tour. In his first Grand Boucle, he still has an open account with the three-week races that so far have left him with more pain than joy. Will he try to make the classification or will he aim for the stages, in particular the two time trials? If he holds on in the mountains, with him there will be the trusty and expert Mikel Landa. Otherwise Soudal Quick Step, which has no other top riders for the grand tours at the start, will be forced to change plans during the race.

From teams to individuals - For the general classification we indicate the names of Felix Gall of Decathlon Ag2 R La Difesa, Pello Bilbao and Santiago Buitrago of Bahrain Victorious, Alexey Lutsenko of Astana, Richard Carapaz of Ef, Enric Mas of Movistar and Simon Yates of Jayco AlUla.

Breakaway men – In this category we also want to include our Giulio Ciccone, the last polka dot jersey of the Tour, more suitable for breakaways in three-week races. Then Ben Healy, Paul Lapeira, Matej Mohoric, Wout Poels, Guillaume Martin, David Gaudu, Neilson Powless, the new Italian champion Alberto Bettiol, Louis Meintjes, Romain Bardet (on his last Tour), Maxim Van Gils, Stephen Williams and Derek Gee as well as Magnus Cort and, last minute news, Lenny Martinez. And then a wild card like Mathieu Van der Poel, who however will often work for Philipsen in the sprints and is expected at the Olympics. But you can expect anything from him.

The sprinters – Jasper Philipsen, who in 2023 won four stages amidst controversy for sprinting to the limit and the green jersey, is the logical favorite to triumph several times again this year. Having said that Van Aert and Laporte could join the fray of fast wheels, there will also be Sam Bennett, Arnaud Démare, Phil Bauhaus, Danny Van Poppel, Biniam Girmay, Marijn Van den Berg, Fabio Jakobsen, Dylan Groenewegen, Fernando Gaviria, Arnaud De Lie , Pascal Ackermann and Alexander Kristoff. The number one opponent should be Mads Pedersen, with Michael Matthews immediately behind the strong Danish Lidl Trek. And then there's him, Mark Cavendish, looking for victory number 35 with which to surpass Eddy Merckx's record. Will he be able to make cycling history?
