Bettiol maintains the leadership in the general standings
Phil Bauhaus wins first stage of Tour Down Under , 149.9km with finish and start in Tanunda. The German sprinter from Bahrain Victorious overtook the Australians Caleb Ewan and Michael Matthews in the sprint, while the Italian Alessandro Covi finished fourth.
Due to a crash in the final stages (which also involved the young talents of Team Ineos Magnus Sheffield and Luke Plapp together with Geraint Thomas ) one of the day's favorites, Jordi Meeus , lost ground, finishing 2'49" behind Bauhaus.
Alberto Bettiol retains the leader's jersey of the general classification with a 6” advantage over Matthews and 8” over Magnus Sheffield .
