The British rider finds the spark in the sprint, Dati does well again; Finn retires

Tom Pidcock wins the third stage of the Tour of the Alps, 174.5 km from Laces to Arco. The British rider sprints ahead of Tommaso Dati , while Egan Bernal takes third place.

The stage was characterised, in the first part, by a fall   of about twenty riders, which forced Lorenzo Finn, among others, to withdraw.

Sam Oomen (Lidl Trek) and Darren Rafferty (EF) mounted a strong attack and found themselves alone in the lead. With thirty kilometers to go, the two leaders still had a 1:50 lead over the group led by Giulio Pellizzari , but the work of Piinarello Q 36.5 reduced the gap.

With 15km to go, Juan Felipe Rodriguez, another EF rider, tried to attack with a rather questionable strategy, given that his teammate Rafferty was ahead.

The Colombian was caught and his action contributed, even more, to reducing the advantage of the escapees.

Rafferty and Oomen were caught with 5km to go, and in the sprint, Pidcock was the quickest of all. The Briton took the lead on the final bend leading to the home straight and went on to win, leaving no room for an excellent Dati, second, or Egan Bernal. Fourth place went to another Italian, Paletti , while fifth place went to Vlasov .

Giulio Pellizzari is still the leader of the general classification, with a 4” advantage over Arensman and 6” over Bernal .
