The Dane needs more time to recover
Team Visma-Lease a Bike has announced that Jonas Vingegaard will not take part in the next Volta a Catalunya (March 24-30). The Danish champion needs more time to recover from his crash at Paris-Nice.
Vingegaard was forced to retire before the sixth stage of the 'Race to the Sun' after falling on the fifth stage with arrival in La Côte-Saint-André. In the accident he suffered a bruise to his hand, as well as dizziness and facial pain, but he still managed to finish the stage.
The Dutch team announced on social media: ' Jonas Vingegaard has not yet recovered sufficiently from his crash at Paris-Nice. For this reason he will not take part in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. We wish him a speedy recovery. '
In place of the Dane, the team will be led by Simon Yates and Sepp Kuss. The two captains will be joined by Steven Kruijswijk, Wilco Kelderman, Bart Lemmen, Matthew Brennan and Menno Huising.
For Vingegaard, there is now a question mark over his next competitive commitment. The program leading up to the Tour de France, where he will seek a third consecutive victory, included only Catalunya and the Critérium du Dauphiné (June 8-15), with a break and a high-altitude retreat between the two races.
