Gerben Thijssen wins the first stage of the Volta ao Algarve from Portimāo to Lagos, 200.8km. A stage designed for sprints, with a courageous Tobias Bayer (Alpecin Deceuninck) who tries the action from afar, but is caught 21 km from the end, while the other two attackers of the day, Tomas Contte (Aviludo - Louletano) and César Source (Rádio Popular - Paredes - Boavista), they are filmed 38 km from the finish.

In the sprint Thijssen is the best of all at exploiting the work of his teammates and beats Marijn Van Den Berg (EF) and Jordi Meeus (Bora Hansgrohe).  

Thijssen also wins the first leader's jersey in the general classification, but tomorrow things could change given that there will be an uphill finish in Alto da Foia .
