Incredible final with Del Grosso caught in the last meters

Matthew Brennan (Team Visma Lease a bike) wins the first stage of the Volta a Catalunya with start and finish in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, 178.6 km.

The race is characterised by bad weather with pouring rain accompanying the runners throughout the day.

A 4-man breakaway doesn’t scare the peloton, which catches up with the attackers with 50km to go. In the last 20km of ups and downs, Red Bull-Bora sets a strong pace to separate the peloton.

On the final descent Del Grosso , almost involuntarily, takes an advantage and remains alone in the lead. On the final ramp the Alpecin rider has the victory in his grasp but is caught in the very last meters by Brennan , author of a sensational comeback. Groves finishes in 2nd place while Del Grosso is 3rd.
