Now let's talk about the race, an appointment with the history of cycling.
The Milan-Sanremo on Saturday 16 March is a race that has remained fascinating over time despite a more than well-known route. And this is precisely the most intriguing aspect, with the last kilometers where anything can happen. This year the departure will be from Pavia and there will be 288 kilometers to travel. The group, and before them the fugitives of the day, will face the Turchino before arriving on the Ligurian seafront. Then Capo Mele, closely followed by Capo Cervo and Capo Berta before Cipressa with its 5.65 kilometers and an average gradient of 4.1% and Poggio , 3,700 meters long at 3.7% and with a peak of '8%. From the 'top' there will be 5.5 km to go with a very technical descent, and the last 2.2 km on the Aurelia.
The scenarios are many but it seems clear who the two main favorites are on the eve. Tadej Pogacar is in great form and will try to conquer another classic monument after Liège, Lombardy and Flanders. Victorious in 2023 with a solitary action starting on the Poggio is Mathieu Van der Poel , in his first road race of the season. The third wheel could be Mads Pedersen , often placed in the races that count and capable of keeping the wheel of the best in the short climbs.
Our starting grid of favorites then sees the Frenchman Christophe Laporte, still looking for a top 10 at Sanremo after nine participations, Matej Mohoric, winner two years ago at the finish line in Via Roma, Thomas Pidcock, and Maxim Van Gils, already on the podium at the Strade Bianche. The sprinters will have to work hard on the Poggio but we don't feel like excluding important riders like Jasper Philipsen, Olav Kooij, Biniam Girmay and Laurence Pithie, a revelation at the beginning of the season with the victory at Cadel Evans in Australia.
There are also some Italians with some ambition: Filippo Ganna , on the podium in 2023, is expected to be confirmed despite a condition that has not been brilliant so far. Jonathan Milan came out of Tirreno-Adriatico very well and is a candidate for a leading role even if Pedersen is already in the team. And Alberto Bettiol , first at the recent Milan-Turin, who could reserve some surprises. But it's Sanremo, so there's room for incredible twists. Follow the last part of the race with us, on Saturday from around 4pm on our Youtube and Twitch channels. Good fun!
